Furniture and homeware handcrafted in Suffolk

Good for people, good for the planet

Hyrst is a social enterprise with a simple goal – to make low-impact and beautiful solid wood furniture and homeware using the resources on our doorstep in Suffolk. We do this by working with skilled local makers and the instructors and inmates at HMP Warren Hill.

Our Story

At Hyrst, we specialise in using solid wood with a clear chain of custody, charting its journey from tree to workshop.

In particular, we source oak, ash, sycamore and elm from woodlands in the UK, working with wildlife trusts and timber yards who can tell us how the tree was grown, felled, milled and dried. We also need to know that the source woodland is carefully managed, with biodiversity and regeneration prioritised.

We take this solid wood and use it to hand make tables, desks, benches, chopping boards, coat hooks and much more. A lot of our homeware and some of our furniture is made in collaboration with the instructors and inmates in the workshop at HMP Warren Hill, a mile from our studio on the Suffolk coast. We pay Warren Hill for the items they produce and that money is then used to fund training qualifications that will reskill prisoners in preparation for their release.
